Education Professionals

This course offers an introduction to the field of teaching and child development. Students will explore educational careers, teacher preparation, and certification requirements while examining professional expectations and current issues in education. Emphasis is placed on understanding the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, linguistic, and moral development of children from birth through adolescence, with a focus on the K–12 learner. Observation, interviewing techniques, and the study of family, peers, schools, culture, and media provide insight into how children grow, learn, and thrive.

COURSES
  • EDUC 101 Introduction to Teaching
    • Students will explore educational careers, teaching preparation, and professional expectations, as well as requirements for teacher certification.
    •  Current trends and issues in education will be examined, including the science of teaching and learning.
  • EDUC 121 Child and Adolescent Development
    • Examines the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, linguistic, and moral development of the child from birth through adolescence with a focus on the K-12 school-aged child. 
    • Basic theories of child development, biological and environmental foundations of development, and the study of children through observation and interviewing techniques are explored. The influence of families, peers, the school environment, culture, and the media are discussed.

Field Experience Activities

  • Observe in the classroom and write reflections
  • Walk around the room and help students as they are working
