Worked-Based Learning

Prosser Career Education Center is committed to providing multiple work-based learning experiences and programs to all students. Work-based learning activities collaboratively engage local employers and Prosser instructors to provide structured learning experiences for students. These experiences allow students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom and lab to real-world situations. All work-based learning experiences and activities are strategically integrated within the CTE curriculum. Some of this valuable learning will occur within the classroom environment while much of it will occur in a place of business or community organization. Work-based learning includes, but is not limited to, the following programs and activities. For more information, click on the links below or contact our Work-based Coordinator.

Work-Based Learning FAQs for Employers

1. Does Prosser carry any liability for the students on WBL? Yes, New Albany Floyd County School Corporation (NAFCS) has a Certificate of Liability Insurance Policy (COI) that covers general liability for incidents that occur while students are at a partner work site performing tasks during their internships, clinicals, and other work-based learning (WBL) organized by the school. See COI attached. This coverage is designed to protect the school and the students in the case that litigation was to follow an incident that took place while a student was completing work- based learning. The current policy NAFCS holds is approximately $1,000,000.

2. What happens if a student gets hurt/injured on site? If the WBL Experience is a paid experience (i.e. paid internship).. In the case that a student is hired on for their work-based learning activity, typically paid-internships, the employer is responsible for providing workers’ compensation insurance as they would for any other employee. This would be enacted in the case a student is injured while performing a task for the company. If the WBL Experience is an unpaid experience (i.e. job shadow or unpaid internship).. Students that are completing an unpaid WBL experience will not receive workers’ compensation from the company since they are not considered employees. Liability in this case all depends on the facts of the situation. If there is negligence or a legal liability, that party (student/family or company) could be liable. For example, if a student dropped something on their foot, it would probably be the family's health insurance.

3. Can Prosser students under the age of 18 perform duties and/or operate machinery deemed ‘hazardous’ by the IN Department of Labor? Yes, Prosser students ages 16 & 17 are considered student learners and get exemptions from what the IDOL deems as ‘hazardous jobs’ because they are enrolled in a course of study and training in a cooperative vocational training program. Please see the IN Department of Labor’s website for more information and a list of ‘hazardous jobs’: https://www.in.gov/dol/youth-employment/prohibited-and-hazardous-occupations-
